Being Totally Present is Easier with Yoga

Updated: May 7, 2019

Ahhhh...#childspose

Every time I attend a yoga class, I think, “Why aren’t I doing this every single day?”

I always leave yoga classes feeling better. I am calmer, more centered, and actually, a little friendlier. Life feels…manageable.

I have been practicing yoga for almost 20 years. There are quite a few lessons I have learned over the years and one of the most important is that there is power in taking the time to just BE.

This is not an easy thing to do. The mind wants to do what the mind wants to do.

I know I am not alone in the struggle to stay in the present. Thoughts go in all different directions, like marbles rolling on the floor.

What errands do I have to do? Where is that meeting?

Who am I supposed to call? Oh, I am so worried about….

But every time I pull my thoughts back, I experience peace.

Every time I adjust my shoulders so that I am not hunching over or tensing up, I experience a little more peace.

Every time I notice my thoughts drifting and I pull them back in, I feel more powerful.

I feel capable and strong. I am centered.

Maybe it is because my whole body is involved. Every part of me is joined together in a very satisfying connection, and I feel joy that my physical body and my soul are working together.

I feel calmer and more focused as I leave class and know my day will be better. This is what I take from my Yoga practice and what I try to apply to my life during the day.

I try to remind myself to take the time to BE in the present. That consistent effort has huge payoffs.

I would love to hear your thoughts on meditation, quiet, yoga and being in the present!
