Your Light, Your Spirit, Your Fire

Don’t you know yet? It is your light that lights the worlds.

- Rumi

Deep inside of you is a light. You were born with this light. It is pure, clear and true. It is who you are. Someone or “more than one” may have tried to dim or snuff out your light a long time ago or even recently, but it remains at your core, ready to light up your life.

This light is your inner spirit. It is the essence of you. It is this amazing part of you that is resilient, strong, beautiful and loving. It is your fire.

When you make the commitment to take care of your spirit, you will grow stronger and stronger each day. Loving attention to your inner self is what will enable you to stay strong against fear, anger, hatred and ignorance.

No matter how dim you feel your light may be, how low in spirit you may feel sometimes, you can reignite your flame with self-love. You will feel it flow through your body with power and strength. You can learn to let your light shine. It can help you and it can help others. This is so important right now in our world. The light will soothe you when you feel beaten down by racism or violence. It will help you reach out to those who need your help. It can guide you through trauma, addiction, and grief. As you feel your light grow stronger, you will be empowered to feel optimistic and hopeful in the worst of times.

To allow this inner spirit to shine, think of yourself as your own best friend. Treat yourself as you would your actual best friend, your child or someone else whom you love very much. We have all internalized incorrect and negative messages over the years. These are messages we have believed all of our lives that are simply not true. They are false. These remarks or statements, made by cruel, unthinking people, or individuals/ groups who have an agenda that has nothing to do with your wellbeing, are not the truth.

For those of you who feel discouraged and hopeless about your life or the state of the world, I would like you to keep an image of a little you, inside the center of your body, fanning the flames of a small fire with your tiny hands as you blow on it gently. As little-you makes these gestures, think of these words. “I love you my spirit. I love you my light.” This is your fire and it is powerful. That is an image you can use going forward. When you feel put down by someone or if a group of people try to put out your fire with their big buckets of evil and cruelty, go back to that image and fan that flame. See it grow larger and stronger, as you fan and repeat loving words to yourself, and let little-you smile and big-you throw your shoulders back.

You can keep that fire going until it warms you, and the fire explodes in a force of love of yourself and all people. But that comes later. First, you must begin to change your thinking.

It can be difficult to confront the fact that those messages are not the real you.

The way to clear those hateful messages is by sending yourself opposite messages of love and kindness. Over and over you need to send your mind and body different thoughts. It won’t happen overnight, but if you keep at it, you can change your view and love yourself in a new, exciting way.

Take the first steps today. Fan your light by being kind to yourself. Each day, keep the image of little-you fanning the flame and take one kind and loving action for yourself.

Tell yourself all the loving words you wish you had heard throughout your life. Start today to change your life for the better.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Marianne Williamson
